What are apparel NFC tags?
Apparel NFC tags are wash-resistant textile labels with an integrated NFC chip, sewn in, woven in or applied by heat-transfer directly into garments. They replace or complement the classic care label and connect the physical product with a digital product story. The end customer taps the inner label of their shirt, jacket or sports outfit with their smartphone and immediately gains access to proof of origin, detailed care instructions in their language, authenticity certificates and exclusive brand content such as artist interviews or collection stories.
For Swiss fashion labels, sportswear manufacturers and uniform outfitters, the apparel NFC tag opens up a new channel for direct-to-consumer communication that is activated with the first purchase and remains active throughout the lifetime of the garment. Unlike QR codes, the NFC tag does not disappear from view. It sits unobtrusively inside the label, is always active and requires no camera app or deliberate alignment. For premium brands this means a permanent digital touchpoint per unit sold, while for outdoor and workwear brands it offers a robust carrier for product documentation, warranty management and reorder processes.
How textile integration works
Three integration methods are available. With sew-on, the label with the NFC chip is placed at any inner seam, typically at the neckline or the side seam. The method is suited to T-shirts, pullovers, trousers and jackets. With the woven-in method, the NFC thread is integrated directly into the textile fabric structure, making the label almost invisible and introducing no difference in wearing comfort. This method is reserved for premium labels and high-priced sportswear. Heat-transfer is suitable for functional textiles where no seam is desired, for example in swimwear or seamless underwear.
The built-in NTAG213 chip is optimised for textile applications and withstands more than 50 wash cycles at 60 degrees, including tumble-drying. Readability remains intact even with soaked fabric, in frost and under intense UV exposure. Each tag is programmed with a unique ID, so that individual garments can be traced via the dashboard access. For product authentication against counterfeiting, each tag can additionally be assigned a cryptographic signature that is verified against a server certificate on every tap.
Personalisation and branding
The labels are available in polyester and cotton materials. Polyester labels are suited to sportswear, technical outdoor clothing and uniforms, as they are extremely tear-resistant and remain washable at 90 degrees. Cotton labels are used for premium fashion, organic collections and natural materials. The standard label size is 15 x 40 millimetres, with special sizes between 10 x 25 millimetres and 25 x 60 millimetres available on request. Branding is applied via woven design, sublimation print or heat-press technique, and all techniques are wash-resistant over the entire product lifetime.
Digital personalisation extends far beyond static content. Each tag can carry a product passport with material composition, supply chain, CO2 footprint and care instructions. Particularly relevant for fashion brands is the storytelling layer: the first tap after purchase shows the collection story, the tenth tap a style guide, the fiftieth tap a loyalty reward. This time-based content orchestration runs automatically in the background and requires no manual curation per garment. For uniforms and workwear, integration with ERP systems is a natural fit, for example for automatic reordering when a wear threshold is reached.
Ordering and delivery
The minimum order quantity is 500 units per label type, with up to 5 variants in size and branding possible within this quantity. The tiered price starts at CHF 1.80 per tag from 5,000 units and reaches CHF 4.20 at 500 units for premium woven labels with cryptographic authentication. All prices are net including programming, quality control and packaging in rolls of 250 units for industrial confection. Integration into your production line takes place in coordination with your tailoring or your confection.
The delivery time is 4 to 6 weeks from confirmation of the prototype, since each batch is programmed and tested product-specifically. We supply a prototype set of 10 samples as standard for internal approval by your product team, and this sample set is free of charge for orders from 2,000 units. Delivery is free of shipping charges to Switzerland or directly to your production site in the EU, Asia or North Africa as DDP delivery. For brands with complex supply chains we also offer drop-shipping to multiple production locations, with the programming synchronisation centralised via our dashboard.
