NFC table stands as a modern alternative to the QR code slip
In Swiss gastronomy, the QR code slip on the table has been established as a standard solution since 2020. Acceptance is high, though the visual impression is often secondary. Printed slips yellow, get dirty or are lost, and the guest’s camera app has to be opened before the menu becomes visible. The NFC table stand from Smart Giveaway solves these problems. It is a high-quality, durable gastronomy tool that offers both a QR code and an NFC tap. The guest chooses which path they prefer, and both lead to the same digital resource.
Smart Giveaway offers the NFC table stand from CHF 8.00 per unit in A6 and A5 sizes, either in acrylic glass or wood and bamboo. The base is heavy enough to stand stable even on tables with foot traffic. A magnetic system on the back allows quick replacement of the printed card, for example for the daily menu, seasonal wine recommendations or rotating offers. Chip programming and final assembly in Lucerne, with delivery times of two to four weeks depending on quantity and configuration.
Menu, daily menu, wine recommendation and feedback on one medium
A single table stand can cover several functions simultaneously. A typical configuration in an upscale restaurant: the NFC tap opens a landing page with four buttons. The first leads to the current menu, divided into starters, mains and desserts. The second shows the daily menu with photo and allergens. The third opens the wine recommendation, ideally curated by the sommelier and linked to the respective courses. The fourth button leads to the feedback form or to a reservation for the next visit.
The concept also works in cafés, bars, hotels and food trucks. On request, guests can order directly from the digital menu if a self-order system is connected. Data from feedback and reservations lands in the restaurant’s backend in compliance with GDPR and revFADP. Reprogramming the stored URL is possible at any time, for example for a menu change or a seasonal update, without the stand having to be physically replaced.
Acrylic or wood, A6 or A5
The material choice is a design decision. Acrylic glass looks modern, clean and pairs excellently with digitally printed cards. The surface is wipe-proof and insensitive to tea lights, wine splashes or oil stains. Wood and bamboo convey sustainability and fit particularly well in bistros, brasseries, natural wine bars and sustainable gastronomy concepts. Smart Giveaway uses FSC-certified wood wherever possible and avoids high-gloss lacquers with solvents.
The A6 format is suited to small bistro tables and bar tables. A5 is the standard solution for restaurants with classic table sizes of 70 cm diameter and above. The magnetic holder on the back holds the printed card reliably, even when service staff move the stand several times a day. A card swap takes about three seconds, which saves time and enables daily updates for daily menus or happy-hour offers. The NFC position is integrated into the base or frame and clearly marked.
Economics, integration and typical use cases
The table stand pays for itself within a few months in most gastronomy operations. Savings arise from lower print costs for printed menus, less staff effort for explanations and more impulse purchases, because guests see add-on products such as desserts or wine recommendations directly on the digital menu. Real data from pilot projects in Lucerne and Zurich shows an increase in the average per-guest revenue of three to seven percent after introducing a digital menu system with photos and wine recommendations.
Integration into existing gastronomy POS systems is optional. Smart Giveaway works with common platforms such as Gastrofix, Lightspeed, Paymash and custom solutions. For smaller operations, a simple landing page is often sufficient, maintained via WordPress or a menu tool such as smart-menu.ch. Typical use cases are restaurants, cafés, bars, hotels with breakfast buffets, food trucks, canteens and event gastronomy. For events with changing locations, the stands can be reprogrammed multiple times and reused for years.
