What is QR smart packaging?
QR smart packaging transforms conventional product packaging into a digital communication surface. The QR code is printed directly onto the box, the label or the outer packaging and connects the physical product with a dynamic landing page, an AR experience or an interactive content hub. For brands from the FMCG, retail and premium-goods sectors, this creates an additional touchpoint that goes far beyond the logo alone.
The solution is deliberately flexible. It combines classic printing technology with digital infrastructure and can be extended with an NFC antenna if required. This creates hybrid packaging that works both by smartphone scan and by tap. The aim is to communicate product authenticity, proof of origin and exclusive offers at exactly the point where consumers hold the product in their hands. The packaging thus evolves from a mere transport medium into an active brand ambassador with measurable reach and traceable interaction data.
How integration works
Implementation takes place in clearly defined steps. First, we analyse the existing product line, the prepress and the desired content together with your marketing and packaging team. Then the QR codes are generated with an individual target URL and integrated into the packaging layout. On request, we supply the print data directly to your existing printer or handle the entire print production via our partner network in Switzerland and the EU.
The stored content is managed via a central platform. It can be adjusted at any time without the packaging needing to be reprinted. This means that campaigns, prize draws or product extensions are continuously swapped out while the printed code remains unchanged. AR content runs via WebAR directly in the smartphone’s browser, without the need to install an additional app. This reduces the entry barrier for end customers to a minimum and ensures high scan rates.
Personalisation and brand design
QR smart packaging is produced entirely in your brand design. The QR code can be adjusted in colour to match the corporate design, provided with a logo inlay and embedded in creative frames. Shaped codes, for example round ones or with rounded modules, are also possible, as long as scannability is maintained in accordance with ISO/IEC 18004. The surrounding packaging is designed in offset or digital print on recycled cardboard, fine cardboard or PE film.
For premium products, finishes such as hot-foil stamping, UV varnish or soft-touch lamination are available. If you also wish to deploy NFC, the antenna is either integrated into the cardboard as an inlay or glued to the inside as a separate label. As a result, the outer surface remains visually unchanged. Each batch can be provided with individual serial numbers, which forms the basis for track and trace, anti-counterfeiting and product-related loyalty programmes.
Ordering, runs and delivery
QR smart packaging is a project-based solution and is individually calculated. The minimum run is 500 units, with typical project sizes between 2,000 and 250,000 units per variant. Pricing depends on format, material, printing process, finishing and optional NFC integration. Based on your requirements, you will receive a binding quotation with quantity tiers and delivery date within two working days.
Production normally takes three to five weeks from print approval. For rollouts with multiple SKUs we plan staggered delivery dates so that your warehouse is not overloaded. Delivery is palletised directly to your filling warehouse or contract filler. On request, we also take on quality assurance of the codes via sample scans and document the results in an inspection report. This ensures that every single code on the finished packaging works reliably and that your campaign launches smoothly.
